THE SHAMAN'S JOURNEY

The cross is a symbol represented in many cultures.   The Incan Cross is rich in it's significance and meaning.   The cross represents the three worlds…the upper, middle and lower.  The upper wold (Hanan Pacha) includes the stars, celestial beings, sun and spiritual realms of guidance and support  The middle world (Kay Pacha) represented the world of human life and nature, and the lower world (Uqhu Pacha) represented the underworld, the shadow, suffering beings, repressed emotions and the personal and collective unconscious.  The hole in the center represents the deepest truth, our center of being, of who we are which is untouched by any world and is shining through us, all of our experiences.   This presence of being is knowing yourself as no form and all form and the space in which it is all arising in.

The shaman's journey often begins with a traumatic or difficult situation or circumstance that can open them up to these worlds or expanded sense of self.  If you can imagine living in an apartment complex.  Your attention is probably going to be on your apartment or level.  An earthquake happens which creates a hole in the floorboards to the upper apartment and the lower apartments.  Now, you can see what is above and below you.  Perhaps you see the sun shining through the upper apartment, so naturally, there is a retreat to the 'light' or to places that feel much more safe.

In these realms of light, the shaman receives much guidance, support and connection.   After some time here, the descent happens to reclaim aspects of his being and emotions that he has denied and repressed.  After this descent, he returns to the 'middle' world with new wisdom, deeper integration and embodiment.

Once during a retreat a woman asked a teacher about why he called on beings in the lower world to help clear out heavy energy.   His response still resonates.   "There is nothing that is good or bad.  It is all about your relationship to things."

It seems to me that in the times we are living in, where the polarities of light and dark (upper and lower) are extreme, there is a possibility to bridge this divide within ourselves by our own willingness to meet our pain, conditioning and suffering we are avoiding, projecting, or indulging in.  There is the presence of being that is living us all and is beyond duality.  In bringing the attention to this source of ones Self, that includes everything, our human suffering and conditioning can be met and clarified within that sacred space of our Self for a deeper embodiment of our essential nature and our full human potential.
